In the next few weeks, Kemp Intermediate School will be conducting our annual Scoliosis Screenings to detect a possible curvature of the spine for 5th GRADE GIRLS ONLY. If abnormalities in the spine are detected early, progressive spinal deformity can be prevented.
The screening procedure is conducted by your child’s campus nurse. This screening involves an examination of your child’s spine from specific angles. Your child will be asked to stand upright, place their arms over their head and slowly bend forward (as if they were diving into a pool of water), this will be done from a front, side, and back view. For this screening to be conducted correctly, the screener will need to be able to clearly view the spine. Please make sure your child is wearing a bra, swimsuit top, or tightly fitted spaghetti strap tank top to school under their shirt. If an abnormality is detected, the student will be rechecked a second time before a referral for further evaluation is made.
If you do not wish for your child to be screened, please contact your child’s campus nurse before (insert date parent must contact clinic by). Spinal Screenings are mandated by the State of Texas. If you do not wish for the school to perform the screening your child may be taken to their primary care physician for evaluation. A copy of the results from your child’s doctor must be provided to the school nurse. If you do not wish for your child to be screened for a spinal deformity by the school or their physician, a notarized affidavit of exemption must be provided.
If your child is currently under active treatment for a spinal condition please contact the campus nurse.
If your child has a suspected curvature, you will be notified by phone and/or letter and asked to take your child for further evaluation.
